I’m broke, my dog has died and my quest has hit a dead end. Now I’m going where everyone in Hubtown goes when their luck runs out, the slums of Old Town. Maybe there I can find something to get back on track.
I poke around the various decrepit buildings looking for things to scavenge. Unfortunately the pickings are slim and I find barely anything. But I do find this stairway, intriguing.
The stairway leads to a long hallway full of locked doors and trapped floors. I pick the locks with ease, sadly the traps are a bigger issue.
When I finally make it to the end of the hallway I discover that Hubtown has a thieves guild. How Cyrodill of them. Maybe they have a job going, I like people with jobs going.
I talk to their leader, a man named Loxley, he has a bad temper and a worse British accent. He wants me to sneak into the rich side of town and liberate a necklace from a wealthy merchant. This I think I can do.
I wait till night fall and sneak into the Heights. Almost immediately I’m accosted by a guard. He tells me to leave before turning his back and walking away. Is he the worst guard ever? Possibly but bless his heart.
I prowl around the house. The merchant and his wife don’t suspect a thing.
Hey the front door is unguarded and everything. This is too easy.
I unlock the strongbox but miss the trap. It’s a nasty surprise but at least it doesn’t alert the guards.
Dammit when I try to leave a guard is standing right by the door.
Fortunately he soon leaves and I’m able to sneak back to Old Town.
Loxley is impressed and rewards me handsomely, not only with a pile of caps but also an electronic lockpick. Nice.
So with a big stack of cash burning a whole in my pocket I go over to the library and buy the holodisk. After downloading and reading it I learn that vault 12 is located underneath the ruins of Bakersfield. If I was intimately familiar with pre-war Californian geography I’m sure this would be a useful clue. I’m not so it isn’t. Still using a process of elimination I might be able to figure it out. Bakersfield isn’t LA and seeing as the two major towns I haven’t visited yet are LA and Necropolis it’s a good guess that vault 12 is under Necropolis.
Hoping to make a bit of extra money I sign up as a guard on a caravan heading to Necropolis. I figure making the trip there alone has got to be more dangerous than making the trip in a group. Things are finally looking up.
Next: Probably Not Murder.
