So far I’ve seen mutant animals, been attacked by crime lords, threatened by lawmen, adopted a dog and been run out of every town I’ve visited. I’ve also watched men die. Ian, Gizmo, the barkeep, those villagers in Shady Sands. I’m not directly to blame for any of their deaths but still it’s hard not to feel a little responsible.
And for all that, I am no closer to locating the water chip. I depart for the Hub hoping my luck will change.
The Hub, or Hubtown, is easily the largest city in the game. It’s the beating heart of commerce and trade in the wasteland. If it’s for sale you can usually find it in the Hub. Plus it’s only a short trek from Junktown. My dog and I arrive there without delay.
It is soon obvious that the Hub is home to a lot of people. The entrance alone probably contains more people then I’ve ever met before.
I make a beeline for the general store and trade all my loot for various books and manuals.
Then I go to the library where I find out that the librarian has a holodisk containing the locations of all the local vaults. Finally a break, unfortunately she wants 750 caps for it and I just spent all my money on books.
I spend the rest of the night reading. It pumps up my repair and science skills, they’re not crucial to me but I still feel like they’ll come in handy. The next morning I hear the Far Go traders are hiring so I decide to pay them a visit.
Turns out someone or something is attacking their caravans, they want to know who. Since it’s just some investigative work I figure I can probably handle it.
I spend my day talking to various folk. There’s a rumour that a mythical creature known as a deathclaw is behind the attacks. I’m directed to the local deathclaw expert Harold who tells me a bunch of bedtime stories in exchange for a handful of caps.
Walking out of Harold’s I run into this friendly idiot who claims to know where the deathclaw lives. Well this I have to see.
Upon entering the cave I immediately gain a level. I throw my new skill points into stealth and then sneak my way further in.
Soon I spot the deathclaw, he looks like a mean bastard. But next to the beast is an enormous mutant calling for his master. I should run away, but well screw it I’ve just beefed up my sneak skill I can get close enough to talk to the mutant.
Turns out that was huge mistake. The death claw immediately spots me and charges. I quickly run away expecting to be mince meat any second now. Then my dog suddenly steps in and fights the deathclaw tooth to tooth, claw to claw.
It’s doesn’t end well for the dog he’s quickly cut to shreds. I run for the exit.
Then just before I get to the mouth of the cave something occurs to me. I still don’t know what has happened to the caravans. The dog just gave it’s life in pursuit of the truth, I can’t go back to the Hub till I solve this mystery. I won’t let the dog’s death be in vain.
Now that the Deathclaw is no longer standing right next to the mutant I’m able to sneak up to him and begin a conversation. The mutant doesn’t say much before he dies but he does hand me a holodisk. I download it to my pipboy and read the contents. Turns out it was a group of mutants that were attacking the caravans but the deathclaw killed all of them. Well that problem sort of solved itself didn’t it?
I head back to the hub. I can’t wait to get my reward, with the caps I get from this I can buy that holodisk, find the location of the nearest vault, recover the waterchip and head home a hero. When the vault bards sing songs about my adventures there will be a special chapter reserved for my dog’s noble sacrifice.
But when I talk to the boss something happens. There isn’t any option to tell him I’ve solved the mystery. I know who was taking the caravans but can’t communicate it to him. I think you need to actually kill the deathclaw to trigger the dialogue option to appear. But I can’t do that so I can’t finish the quest. No money, no xps, nothing.
